Robi & Maiqui

The thing about engagements is that they are designed to be fleeting. It’s akin to the meeting of strangers in a train station, like that at the Kyoto Central Station where Robi and Maiqui decided to preserve the memory of their engagement.

Designed by Hiroshi Hara, the Kyoto Central Station is the second largest building in Japan. Its grandeur matched the great love between Robi and Maiqui.

In that architectural marvel of glass and steel, their love story found its perfect prelude—the platform for the destination, romantic in its remarkable finality. Sweeping lines of steel crisscrossed with massive glass panels to create scenes that gave the shoot a surreal, almost futuristic mood. I felt like I was in an episode of HBO’s Westworld.

In the middle of all that busy intersection was the stillness of Robi and Maiqui’s decision—hand in hand, heart to heart—to be strangers no more in that moment and beyond.
